エゾモモンガは夜行性で、アカゲラなどの巣の中に身をひそませています。中には寒さのために夫婦や親子でもないのに2匹暖をとるために同じ穴に潜んでいることもあります。昼間はほとんど寝ていますが、少し木をたたいてやると小さな穴から顔をのぞかせてこちらを不安そうに見ます。広葉樹に住み家を求めるため、最近は北海道でも針葉樹が多く植林されているため、生息域が狭くなっている原因となっているようです。
The Russian flying squirrel is nocturnal; it nests and roosts in daytime in tree cavities and dreys. Ocasionally there are some squirrels in the same cavity to warm theirselves. In daytime thay almost sleep in the cavity of tree, but if we knock the tree, thay anxiously peep at us from the hole.　Their nests are built in broadleaf trees, in these days coniferous trees tend to be planted in Hokkaido, their habitats are getting small.
