絶滅危惧2類 (VU）・特別天然記念物 1924年に約30羽となり、環境省を始め保護増殖事業実施の成果で、現在、生息数が800羽まで増加したとのことでしす。
北海道の方言に「けあらし」という冬の霧があります。厳冬のマイナス20～25度と気温の寒い朝、海面や川面に白いゆげが立ちます。この白いゆげを地元の人は「けあらし」と言います。
　「けあらし」は、風がおだやかで寒さの厳しい日、陸の寒気がゆっくりと海上に流れ出して、海面の水蒸気を冷やしてできる濃い霧で、気象用語では蒸気霧といいます。
釧路では冷え込みが厳しく、弱い北東風が吹く朝方によく発生します。

The Japanese crane, also known as the red-crowned crane is sacred and seen as a symbol of fidelity, good luck, love and long life in the Orient. It is also the second rarest crane species in the world. These tall, graceful birds are mainly white in colour with black lower wings. In males, the cheeks, throat and neck are also black, whilst in females they are a pearly-grey. Adults have a bare patch of skin on the crown of the head, which is bright red in colour. The bill is an olive-green colour and the legs are black. Juveniles are similar in appearance although they lack the red crown and have black tipped outer flight feathers.
The steamy mist that rises off the river, which we call "kearashi," can often be seen on clear but cold days. The mist rises when cold, dry air blows over the relatively warmer surface of the water.

Japanese Crane couple in the rime
Japanese Crane couple definitely is not divorced throughout their lives. It was heard from Mr. Masahiro Wada, a photographer living at TSURUI Village specialized in Japanese cranes, that when one of the pair was killed in a traffic accident, another had kept up being at his side until he was covered with snow.

Family cranes in KEARASHI
けあらしは気嵐と書きます。けあらしは上記しましたが風のない－10℃以下の寒い朝に見られます。これは、凍らない川から出た蒸気のことで、これが木々の枝に付着し霧氷になります。

KEARASH is meaning that “air storm” in Japanese. But it is not storm. We can see KEARASHI when it is no wind and very cold(under –10℃) morning. KEARASHI is vapor from not frozen river, and this vapor makes rime on the trees

Silent morning
これは音羽橋というカメラマンには超有名な橋です。そこからは、丹頂鶴たちの寝床が観察できます。多い時には30人ぐらいのカメラマンが5時から－15℃の早朝なのにシャッターチャンスを狙います。

This photo was taken at OTOWA Bridge, very famous among photographers. Otowa is meaning OTO=sound and WA=wing, it is good name, isn’t it? From there we can sea the cranes sleeping in the river. There are many photographers (maximum over 30 peoples) on the bridge in spite of very early(5AM) and cold(under –15℃) morning.

Going home in the sun set
これは菊池牧場という夕日の丹頂を撮るうえで有名な撮影場所です。私有地であり、地主さんのご好意でカメラマンに解放していますので、地主さんが来ましたら挨拶はしてください。地主さんは毎夕巡回しに現れますので。

This photo was taken at KIKUCHI Farm, which is a private land and he liberate it for photographers, so I recommend you to say “Hello” to him when he patrols there.

鶴見台からの観察
これは伊藤サンクチュアリに並ぶ鶴の観察地点で有名な場所から撮影しました。ここでは渡部トメさんという方が毎日鶴にえさを与えています。毎年11月頃から3月頃まで約180羽前後のタンチョウが餌を求めにやってきます。
Watch from TSURUMIDAI
These photos were taken at TSURUMIDAI. It is meaning that TSURU=crane, MI=watch, and DAI=platform in Japanese. Mrs. Tome Watabe, very old woman, feeds to cranes daily. We can see cranes coming to get feed there from November to March every year.

丹頂鶴は2月末から3月にかけて、生涯の番（つがい）を見つけるために、あらゆる場所でこのような求愛ダンスがみられます。
その後、営巣は湿原で行い、2個の卵を産みつけ、約29-34日間抱卵してゴールデンウィーク頃には、かわいい雛が誕生します。そして１年かけて子育てをします。
その頃に一回行ってみたいですね。

All cranes engage in dancing, which includes various behaviors such as bowing, jumping, running, stick or grass tossing, and wing flapping.
In spring season nests are built on wet ground or in shallow water. Females usually lay two eggs and incubation (by both sexes) lasts 29-34 days.

一番乗りの喜び
この写真は伊藤サンクチュアリで撮影しました。2月の寒い朝の伊藤サンクチュアリには、10時にならないと鶴はやってきません。しかしこの時は9時に番の鶴がやってきました。
1番に到着した喜びを2匹ではしゃぎながらこちらに向かって来た様子が伺われます。この日は、強風が吹いて地面に積もった粉雪が地上高く舞っていました。　　　　

Rejoicing at first arrive
These photos were taken at ITO Sanctuary. In early cold morning (it was February) cranes don’t come to there until 10 o’clock. But that day one couple cranes came at 9 o’clock. They were walking joyfully for first arriving to the feeding ground. On that day the strong wind filled the air with powdery snow.

Love Dance
From February to March we can see love dance all around of TSURUI Village. Then they build a nest in Kushiro Marsh, and a baby bird is born in May.

2009年正月に丹頂を撮影しに北海道に行きました。これは阿寒丹頂センターで撮影したものです。

菊池牧場からの撮影

地元の人とごく一部のカメラマンのみが知っている場所からの撮影。ここは音羽橋より落ち着いて撮影できました。朝日が昇ってくると同時に赤く川を染め上げてゆきます。

久しぶりに冬の鶴居村で丹頂をたくさん撮ってきました。前日まで大雪でしたが、到着日には快晴となって良い舞台が準備されていました。釧路は雪が比較的北海道の中では少ないため、吹雪の中の丹頂もよいのですが、久しぶりの冬の北海道は晴れ＋少量の雲が最高に思います。
