オオワシは日本で見られる最大の猛禽類です。営巣・繁殖はシベリア極東地方で、流氷シーズンは越冬で日本に飛来してきます。
翼を広げると実に2.5m、体重は7.5kgもあります。
白と黒のツートンカラーで粋な井出たちで、世界中のバードウォッチャーがこの極寒の知床まで来るのもうなづけます。
オオワシの生息数は5000-7000羽で絶滅危惧Ⅱ類に指定された貴重な野鳥です。

These very large, powerful eagles are also striking in appearance. They are dark but dramatically colored with white tail, shoulders, rump, thighs and forehead.
These eagles are believed to breed only in far eastern Russia, along the coasts and surrounding islands of the Sea of Okhotsk and Bering Sea. They are most common on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
Each winter, many Steller's sea eagles migrate from their breeding grounds to Japan, and a few reach Korea or even farther afield. Other individuals do not migrate, but simply move to open water as winter approaches.
Steller's sea eagles do not occur in large numbers(about 5000-7000 numbers), but their populations appear to be stable. Their feathers were once highly prized, but today these magnificent birds are protected throughout their range. They are especially revered in Japan, where they are known as O-washi.

この写真は羅臼港から出港する観光船（ゴジラ岩観光）から撮影したものです。2日にわたり撮影し、1日目は8時半からの便で天気は小雪が舞う程度。2日目は5時の便で晴れていたが、流氷が厚く出向が6時半になり、朝日に浴びるオオワシは撮影できませんでした。

These photos were taken from the tourist boat (GOJIRAIWA Tourist) on drift ice. I tried to take photos during 2 days, 1st day was snowish day, and 2nd day was fine day. But on 2nd day the drift ice was very thick, so tourist boat could not leave until 6:30, and we could not take photos of eagle over the drift ice at sunrise.

観光船からの撮影のみでなく、羅臼では道路からもオオワシを観察することができます。しかし400mmぐらいのレンズがないといい写真は撮れないと思います。
We can take photos of eagles not only from the tourist ship, but from the road. But good shot needs to use over 400mm lens.

近年流氷のボリュームは地球温暖化に伴う縮小で、2007年のように日本にほとんど来ない年も見られるようになりました。
しかし幸運なことに私が訪れた2008年の冬はラニーニャによる影響で、寒い冬を向かえ、立派な流氷に出会えることができました。
オオワシ・オジロワシの世界中のバードウォッチャーは流氷情報に一喜一憂して新年から2月末まで気をもむようです。

The white-tailed eagle - also known as the sea eagle or white-tailed sea eagle - is a huge bird with broad wings up to 245 cm (over 8 feet) wide.
In these days, Ice Floe was contracted according to global warming.
But in 2008 winter Ice Floe size was very huge induced to "La Nina".
I was very lucky to be able to take photos of Eagles over huge Ice Floe.

オオワシは白と黒のツートンカラーでオジロワシはひとまわり小型で茶色の方です。同じワシでも性格は見ているとかなり違うことがわかります。オジロワシは、えさにすぐに飛びつき警戒心がありません。一方、オオワシは警戒心が強く、なかなかえさに飛びつきません。オオワシはオジロワシが捕らえたえさを強引に横取りするシーンをよく見かけます。オオワシはずる賢さを持っているようです。警戒心のないオジロワシですから取られて仕方ありませんね。

Steller's Sea-Eagle is so cautious that he does not easily catch fish. On the other hand White-tailed Eagle is not cautious. We often can see Steller's Sea-Eagle stealing fish which White-tailed Eagle caught.

これは阿寒丹頂センターで撮影したもので、給仕時間になると、丹頂に与えた餌をオジロワシが横からかっさらうシーンが認めます。

These photos were taken at "Akan Tanchou center". At this place we can sea White-tailed Eagle robbing feed which is given for Red-crowned Crane.

2008年の流氷は3-4年に1度しか見られないほどの立派な流氷が漂流してきました。流氷同士がこすれるときに発生する摩擦音が近くに行くと聞こえてきます。ギーッ、グゥーといった音でしょうか。
北海道標津町～別海町にある細長い半島です。延長28kmにわたる砂嘴であり、規模としては日本最大であります。
春になるとオオハクチョウの群れがここに集まり、写真家が集います。

Notsuke-Peninsular where is located in Shibetsu-city is a biggest sand spit in Japan. This year(2008) is very cold year, so huge and beautiful drift ices came to Hokkaido.
In early spring flock of whooper swans come here, and many photographers enjoy taking photos of them.
